Reason: If IMAP does not know to which folder the deleted email should be moved, you get an error message. Below is your solution for the most commonly used e-mail programs (iPhone, Mac Mail, Outlook 2010).

iPhone:

Go to "Settings" -> "Mail, Contacts ...", choose your IMAP account, choose "Account Info" and choose "Advanced" below.
1)  Make sure that the word INBOX (with capital letters) has been entered in "IMAP Path Prefix" .
2) You can also choose which folder you want as Trash / Trash. Then click on "Done".

Mac Mail:

1. Right-click on the mailbox where this problem occurs, and choose "Edit <name>". Or choose Mail-> Preferences at the top left and click on the account.

2. Then choose Advanced. With IMAP Path Prefix you enter: INBOX

3. Close the tab, and choose save if requested

Outlook 2010:

Go to "File" -> "Account settings", double click on the account, then to "More Settings" where a tab is present to choose the folder for deleted emails.
